13th January 2014 - Tutoring Adventures in Dubai by Mia Mackie
Looking back over 2013, without a doubt one of the year's highlights for me was working for Carfax Education out in Dubai. I was fortunate enough to escape the bitter British weather and undertake a one month placement there in December, tutoring English and Humanities. It was certainly a truly unforgettable experience. What stands out most is the people I worked with. Given that so often whom we work with can make or break an experience, (particularly during a placement abroad when away from friends, family and the familiar,) anyone considering applying for a similar vacancy can rest assured that there is no better team that could take you under their wing than Carfax Dubai.
I had never been to the Middle East before and didn't really know what to expect, yet after being met by a smiley Carfax colleague at Dubai airport, any apprehension quickly vanished, and I was instantly made to feel comfortable and extremely welcome.
There was no real typical day as such. Tutoring ranged from teaching one to one in the friendly Carfax office in Knowledge village, to visiting and being thoroughly welcomed into a client’s home to teach a small family over a comforting cup of Arabic tea. With variety being the spice of life, the range of pupils kept each day an experience in its own right, and tutoring a variety of age groups, nationalities, and abilities ensured that no day could ever be dull or mundane.
The team made a huge effort to integrate me very quickly into the office and indeed the nightlife, as well as introducing me to the many social activities that Dubai has to offer- from going to the horse races at Maydan, early Saturday morning rowing, visiting the beautiful mosques, taking advantage of the many delicious restaurants, Friday brunch club, camel rides, rugby sevens, to a well-deserved lazy day on the beach in glorious sunshine....did I mention the feast to behold at the Carfax Christmas dinner???
If the prospect of constant blue skies isn't enough, take it from me that if anyone is looking for a challenging role with heaps of fun guaranteed, they should grab the opportunity to tutor in Dubai with both hands. I can assure you will not only have a rare and invaluable insight into Middle Eastern culture, but you will also make some amazing friends along the way.
